Traditional dye pits where cloth is tie dyed, and beautiful designs are produced. Five hundred years of tradition here. Formerly, a booming business, the place is getting a bit rundown. Cloth available for purchase here and the sellers very much appreciate any support that is given.

The experience in itself was very interesting getting see a tradition of over 100 years still being practised. As soon as we entered we had a guide he explained the tye and dye process at the dyeing pit. Men are responsible for the dyeing whilst women tie the designs in their local homes. He took us to one of the local homes where I was able to try out tying one of the patterns. Some of these patterns take weeks to tye. It is a craft that is being passed down from generations. I bought a fabric so I didnt have to pay them. I reckon if i didnt buy a fabric I would have to pay. Only thing that really needs to be done is to work on the hygiene in the place - there were lots of flies which doesnt really make for a comfortable experience

Historic dye works, where for 500 years in deep dye pits textiles are hand-dyed with natural indigo in different shades of blue. The processes are explained and are shown by the workers. Entrance is free but tips are expected and appreciated. You have the opportunity to buy some very beautiful cloths and textiles directly from the producer.

The Kofar Matar Dye Pits are a very historical place for the people of Kano. Established in 1498, the Kofar Matar pits situated in the city centre, goes as way back as 500yrs plus. It has been constantly in use ever since, and a lot of tourists come from all over the world to see it. Interestingly, they still use the same method they did use in those days. Kofar Mata dye pits are located very close to the old Kofar Mata historical gate and walls, also known as Ganuwa. According to a school of thought, the dye pits existed long before the building of the Kofar Mata gate and walls. The Kofar Mata dye pits are also located east of the Kano City central mosque.
