Designated Important Bird Area. A serene and natural environment for the protection of birds, ecological studies, scientific research, academic studies and various forms of biological training. This institute is a foremost institute for ornithological studies in West Africa and has championed various conservation issues over the years. Guided birding tours can be conducted within the reserve both as a means of study and for recreation and nature appreciation.

A small but beautiful field station dedicated to Ornithological training of young West Africans. APLORI consists of a few well furnished blocks that provide office spaces, lecture room, a molecular laboratory and accommodation for both local and International students and faculty. All of these facilities occupy a small space and are surrounded by the natural scenery and sounds of nature and wildlife from the lovely little Amurum Forest Reserve which serves as a field laboratory for training the students in field Ornithology and other ecological techniques. The small Forest is also one of the most popular birding destinations for resident and visiting bird watchers in Nigeria.
